Khan and one of the other felines in the 'hood; CRS reports via FAS; Eggnog!!!

I've mentioned CRS reports here before. I'm kind of an info junkie and my tax money goes into these reports that are supposed to help Congress in their law-making function. They are not readily available to the public unless a member of Congress chooses to release a report. A number of non-governmental entities make these reports available (when they are able to obtain them). One of my favorites is the Federation of American Scientists. Here are links to the reports they have obtained and released this month:

October 2
October 3
October 9
October 10

So, politics and other potentially depressing world material aside (I'm glad the 2012 election is rapidly approaching and will soon be over), I went to the store tonight. I had the chance to pick up my first quart of eggnog for the 2012 fall/winter season. I love eggnog. Probably not good that I downed the entire quart in less than 15 minutes. Oh well, tasted GREAT!!!

The second portion of the title above says "Yucky time". Up until about the past month, I believed that I would be working 4 on-1 off day shifts for about the next month. I found out some time last month that I'll be doing 4 on-1 off night shifts. I don't mind night shift one bit. It's just going to make for one hell of a time getting ready for the Rocket City Marathon.

I thought I had posted this before, but I can't find it with a quick search, so here goes...

HR 347 hubbub

I've seen a fair amount of material regarding HR 347 and how it was signed by the current President without fanfare or news coverage and how HR 347 abridges free speech.

I'm not philosophically aligned with the incumbent very much and I won't vote for him. However...

The quick and dirty first check provides some context to this bill. For those inclined to believe that snopes is some overarching leftist conspiracy (not me), most of the language in the applicable section of Title 18 of the United States Code that was amended by HR 347 has been in existence since 1971. If you want to do the research, it was Public Law 91-644, a.k.a the Omnibus Crime Control Act of 1970. If you'd just like to read the applicable sections, the beginning of 18 USC § 1752 is here and the rest is here.

So, much of the basic language for 18 USC § 1752 was actually signed into law by Richard Nixon. Since 1971, 18 USC § 1752 has been modified several times. You can view the modifications and their dates and applicable public laws (signed into law by Reagan, Clinton, Bush II, and now Obama) here.

All this is basically to say that this is NOT the issue that will keep me from voting for the incumbent...

I figured I'd do a little 5k yesterday morning. It was the Keep Athens-Limestone Beautiful Duck and Run 5K. Results are linked from North Alabama Runner.

So, there I am on Friday night with my wife at a fundraiser carnival that was being held at the new high school in Madison, AL. Things were a little slow, so I busted out the old and trusty hacky sack. I'm standing there going to town with it and another dude even came over and joined in for a few minutes. After he left, I got back to it again. That's when the trouble started. Not trouble as in trouble with folks. Trouble as in my right foot was hiked up at least five feet behind my body. It's NOT pleasing to hear a double pop from that stance and then feel a shot of pain near the upper end of your hamstrings. I can still walk and even kept a semi-respectable (although notably slower) pace at the 5K the next morning, so I don't think it's really bad. Low grade strain I think (and hope). Still sore as a son of a gun. My wife says I'm getting old. I don't believe it...

Single Browns Ferry document in ADAMS for the past week; Crossword .bat; Fact checkers

The NRC only had one document posted for Browns Ferry in its ADAMS repository for the past week:
  1. ML12235A478 - Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant, Unit 2, 10 CFR 50.46 30-Day Report for Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant, Unit 2.

I've been (automatically, for the most part) downloading the Washington Post's daily crossword for the past several years. It's actually pretty easy. First, I use a quick and dirty batch file to download the applicable file.
---Copy below this and paste into a notepad file. Save as "all files"->[insert name].bat---
@echo off
echo %%date%% = %date%
for /f "tokens=1-3 delims=/" %%j in ("%date%") do (
set month=%%j
set day=%%k
set year=%%l
)
wget "http://cdn.games.arkadiumhosted.com/washingtonpost/crossynergy/cs%year%%month%%day%.jpz" -O chron/chron.com_%month%-%day%-20%year%.jpz
pause
----------End of batch, remove this line also----------
To make it automatic, set up a daily scheduled activity with Windows scheduler. When this file runs, you'll have a file called csYYMMDD.jpz. I convert the applicable .jpz to a .puz file using jpz2puz. You can find that here. When you convert the file to a .puz file, you can open it with something like the Across Lite Crossword Solver. Sharpen your word skills...
Fact checkers have been in the news for the past couple of days. Both the Democrats AND Republicans have had issues with the fact checkers. Maybe, just maybe, the fact checkers are doing it mostly right if they're angering both sides. For the most part, the fact checking sites do a much better job of including reference/source material than the campaigns that attack them do. To that end, I've seen mentioned multiple times (in various posts via FB and other social media) items like "snopes.com is funded by George Soros". I take most of what I read online with a grain of salt. If you take what the Mikkelson's themselves have to say about that and bounce it against what a spot like factcheck.org has to say regarding the same rumor, you might at least feel a little better about the source of snopes.com funding. On a related, but more aimed toward current affairs tack, here's a little factcheck.org piece discussing how both of the current major party Presidential campaigns continue to engage in word twisting/hyperbole/outright misinformation regarding Medicare funding. Make of it what you will, but I'd much rather have information that is sourced...
